The REINS
Standard
The operating standard for accountable machine work.
Machine capability is abundant. Accountability is not. REINS is the standard that closes the gap: five commitments a system must keep before machine work deserves to be called employable.
Clear Signpost is the first platform built to it.
Reversible
No consequential action without a return path. Work proceeds in increments that can be undone, and the rare genuinely irreversible act is named as such and gated behind explicit human approval — never discovered to be irreversible afterward. Deletion is never an ordinary outcome: records archive by default, and lawful erasure leaves a receipt that survives the content.
Evidenced
Every consequential act leaves a receipt another person can audit: what was known, what was permitted, what was attempted, what was produced, and who accepted it. A claim of completion is not completion — an evaluator outside the actor decides. Numbers travel with their sources, freshness, and gaps; a system that cannot show its evidence does not get believed.
Incremental
Authority is earned one proven step at a time. New capability starts observed, then assists, then acts within bounds, then owns — each expansion justified by the record, never by confidence. Trust contracts automatically when the evidence turns; it never silently expands.
Negotiated
Work happens under agreed contracts, not assumptions. Assignments are issued and accepted; consequential plans are read back before they run; changes create new versions with migration obligations rather than silently rewriting what was agreed. Silence is never consent, and expiry is never approval.
Sovereign
A human remains the root of every chain of authority. Machines hold bounded, revocable delegations — never sovereignty. Every permission traces to a person who granted it, every escalation returns to a person who must decide, and the system's most important product is that the person can sleep.
THE CONFORMANCE TEST
A platform is REINS-compliant when all five commitments are structural — enforced by the system's own machinery — rather than promised by policy.
